Found-Footage Horror Breakthrough
Paranormal Activity 1 Cast
The first film in the Paranormal Activity franchise is a refreshingly old-fashioned horror movie. It mines its chills with incremental, agonizing gradations of old-fashioned what’s-that-noise-in-the-hallway suspense.
Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat were both relatively unknown actors when they starred in the original Paranormal Activity. But they quickly became recognizable faces thanks to the low-budget hit that helped usher in the found-footage genre.
Micah Sloat
Micah Sloat is a talented actor who has built a dedicated fan base. He has a strong online presence and regularly interacts with fans, bringing a personal touch to his roles. He has also ventured into other genres, demonstrating his versatility as an actor.
Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat starred in Paranormal Activity, which was released in 2007. It is one of the first films to use the found footage format, and it became a box office hit, spawning several sequels.
Micah Sloat was born on May 8, 1981, in Westport, Connecticut. He was largely unknown before he landed the role in Paranormal Activity, but has since appeared in multiple movies. He has also worked on television and theater. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Natasha. They have two children. He enjoys traveling and has a keen interest in photography. Katie Featherston
Katie Featherston is an actress best known for her role in the Paranormal Activity series. She has also appeared in the film’s sequels and the spin-off film Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. She has a BFA from Southern Methodist University and lives in Los Angeles.
In the first film, Featherston portrays Katie, a woman who moves into a new house with her boyfriend Micah. Soon they realize that their house is haunted. They begin to document the phenomena with a camera and record strange sounds, including thuds, door slamming, and demonic grunts and screeches.
The improvised movie was rejected by most festivals, but it impressed a CAA mailroom worker who screened it for the company’s executives. He arranged for the film to be distributed, and it went on to break records at the box office and usher in the found-footage genre. The cast was surprised by the movie’s success. It cost only $15,000 to make, but it earned more than $100 million dollars.

Katie and Micah move into a suburban tract house and are bothered by an evil presence that they believe to be a ghost. After a series of unsettling events, they set up a camera in their bedroom to record any paranormal activity that might occur while they sleep. Psychic Dr. Fredrichs warns them that it is a demon that feeds on negative energy, but they insist on communicating with it. Micah brings home an Ouija board, and the planchette moves on its own. The couple finds non-human footprints on baby powder that Micah sprinkled in the hallway.
The unexpected success of this microbudget horror film has given rise to a franchise, and the two lead actors became household names after its release. It is the first film in the Paranormal Activity series and was a breakthrough for found-footage horror films.
Oren Peli
Peli’s no-frills approach to horror pays off in a film that earns its screams with incremental, at times agonizing gradations of old-fashioned, what’s-that-noise-in-the-hallway suspense. He also knows how to use the camera to convey paranormal activity with the tiniest of movements and sound effects – the door mysteriously opening and shutting, footsteps, and loud thuds in the walls all make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
For budget reasons, Peli made the film look as realistic as possible – he even shot some scenes on his own to save money on crew costs. He cast Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat after auditioning a few hundred people and finding them both had a natural chemistry.
Peli tried out a few endings for Paranormal Activity before settling on one that, briefly, involves the arrival of police. He also trialled an ending that offered a cheap last-second jump-scare, which would have been completely out of character with the rest of the movie.
